Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site

About the Company

rating: 4.8

Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site is located approximately 30 miles southeast of Bryan/College Station. It consists of six acres in Anderson, county seat of Grimes County. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department acquired the property by purchase in 1977 from a Fanthorp descendant, and it was opened to the public Oct. 4, 1987, to demonstrate 19th century life at an early Texas stagecoach stop and family home. Ten years were spent researching and restoring the inn to its 1850 use as both a family home and travelers' stop.

This place is a pretty cool visit, while brief, it is what you make of it. We were lucky enough to get the nickle tour from a period dressed gentlemen who was very nice and seemed to enjoy his job. While the place is free to visit, they do ask for donations, especially for the tour. The stories of its history are interesting and delightful to hear. Use your imagination and youll enjoy yourself. The stagecoach was pretty neat to see and sit in. We were told by a local that they give horse drawn wagon rides but since we were there not to long before it was closing down for the evening, we only got to sit inside and take pictures. Still, we enjoyed ourselves. We also walked across the street to pay our respects in the small cemetery.

Arrived at around noon and my girlfriend and I were the only guests present. The guide was warm, friendly, and informative, answering all our questions eagerly and thoroughly. The grounds are well maintained and the building itself is easy to navigate. This site is certainly a hidden gem. There are no admission costs but donations are appreciated.

Beautiful property in what was once Texas s 8th largest city. Chandler is great, and very knowledgeable about the history of the Fanthorp Family and the Inn itself. He gave us a great tour and answered all our questions. A must see if you are passing through and definitely worth the trip.

Hands down haunted. Inside main bedroom the wardrobe door open by itself and the hat inside it on the shelf began to rock back and forth. Mind you this was during broad day light on a beautiful sunny day.

Very small state historic site. GREAT! We were the only guests present. Undivided attention from the docent. Talked for at least 45 minutes about the little known bits of history about, and around, the old stagecoach stop. GO VISIT! open Friday, Saturday & Sunday
