We really love coming here and walking the trails. We take the tower trail so we can climb up the stairs and see everything from the tower. Its about .5 miles to it and back. Go early when its not too hot because it gets HOT. There is restrooms when you get there and on the trails I dont think there is any, bit they do have places to sit to rest up a bit. Will be coming again when its not as hot.

Very nice area for enjoying nature, birding, and all kinds of wildlife. They have signage and maps to guide you on the many well maintained trails. They have two observation towers to get a Birds Eye view of the refuge. Take note it does get hot so take plenty of water. Mosquitoes and gnats are prevalent so it is recommended to take bug repellents or protective gear. At the entrance they have clean and air conditioned restrooms. I very much enjoyed the trails and scenic views. Toilets: Restrooms were clean and were nice and cool.

Loved this refuge, beautiful native vegetation, butterflies, birds, so many relaxation spots, beautiful trails, maps are not easy to follow! Looks simple enough on paper, till you get lost and keep going in circles, but, I know not yet met a ranger I did not like, all rangers at every South Texas park have been helpful, friendly and simply the best!

We came strictly for birding on April 13 and 14. Easy to get to, excellent refuge headquarters. Buy insect repellent here before you head out!!! The first day we birded the east part of the refuge, mostly shorebirds, waders and waterfowl. Egrets, Ibis, black-bellied whistling ducks, long-billed dowitcher s etc. Second day was the more forested part: saw and photographed Altamira oriole and green jay; identified other lifers including zone tailed hawk, brown crested flycatcher, long-billed thrasher among others. The vegetation is dense so its much easier to hear than to see birds. Merlin Sound is a real asset. One of the best birding sites ever, especially for South Texas rarities. Picnic area: Very shaded and pleasant

This wild life refuge is breathtaking! The company I work for sponsored the Run for the Refuge 5k and fun mile. The staff at Santa Ana are so professional and courteous. The gift shop is quite lovely. I bought my daughter a blue grosbeak stuffed bird that sings a song when you squeeze it. The trails are so scenic and gorgeous; be ready to take long walks and breath some fresh clean air! Green jays, Altimira Oriole, Woodpeckers, Verdin, Thrashers, waterfowl, and so much more!

Theres a lot of fear mongering over the border these days but parks along the border remain perfectly safe to travel to and bird. Just dont go down near the river at night....which you cant anyway since all these parks close at dusk. There is a huge police presence and in the very unlikely event that anything happened, they would be on the spot in a hurry. They basically sit in their cars and drive up and down the levy and watch the birders going in and out of the reserve. Santa Ana remains one of the premier birding hotspots in the country and our visit here in April was very productive.

Tom and Karyn Schmitz came to my school to do a presentation on birds. They did an incredible job. The presentation had pictures, a PowerPoint with videos, and they had real-life models and replicas of various birds and their adaptations. They had my students interested and engaged. They even gave one of my students a little bird book because she asked an interesting question! She was thrilled!!! My students have always enjoyed the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge. They love walking around and exploring . The rope bridge is always anticipated with excited!! I want to thank the refuge for its dedication to the education system!!! A definite must visit!

Really nice park its fairly easy to get to the observation bridge if thats what you want to go see. The park is large and you can go on a four hour walk. Make sure to bring bug spray they do have marshy terrain that they keep up with so you will come into contact with Nats and mosquitos if you dont Spray up. The visitor center closes at 4pm but you can stay in the park until sun down. I highly recommend.

I have been coming here for 6 winters. Every year I see less and less wildlife on this wildlife preserve. I used to see birds and hawks, or bobcat in the wild while riding tram or hiking around. We would also see birds at bird blinds. I took one photo the whole trip this time. I enjoyed the tram ride and our host was very knowledgeable. However the fumes from truck pulling the tram burned my eyes and lungs. This is the 3rd year we were told its being fixed and or replaced. The ponds at front of property completely dry. I understand it is due to water allotments, but something needs to happen or there will be zero wildlife in this wildlife preserve. The cemetery was cool as usual.

very relaxing, I really liked it, the roads are clean. The large and paved parking lot, $5usd entrance fee, has bathrooms and a souvenir shop. My recommendations would be: bring water, insect repellent, sunscreen, cap or hat, comfortable clothing for walking, battery in your cell phone for emergencies. , be alert on the road for any snakes, wild cats, etc. If you are lucky you will observe various birds and varied fauna, the air you breathe is very fresh. They have a suspension bridge and a viewing tower, it is important that you watch your children at all times and pay attention to the signs. It has benches to rest on the trails, and tables to eat in an area that I dont remember. You can take very cool photos!! Please do not litter!! It is a very pleasant nature reserve to visit.

Very nice place to take a walk. Plenty of wildlife during certain times of the day. Only downside is not enough shade. Be very safe when coming out make sure you have plenty of water and dont take on more than you can handle. Check weather to make sure it isnt too hot or else you will regret it. Other than that fun duck spotting shaded areas, benches throughout the park (unshaded), lakes are nice and calm. Clean other than natural occuring debris (broken branches etc). If you enjoy nature this place will be perfect if you take the necessary steps to make it a perfect day out. Gift store is open little toys and displays of animals for the kids. There is a $10 admission into the park for the year per car or a $5 fee for the day per car. I suggest the $10 because you will be back as it is a big park and hard to take it all on in one day.

I really enjoyed this place especially because I ran into it on a prior review and had to see for myself. I went in the wrong attire I wore flip flops yea I know. But overall I enjoyed it crossing this rope bridge and climb the towers they have there so very nice view. Yet have to go back and check out other trails and looking forward the cemetery site. This place is huge so I dont think Ill ever finish walking it. Has to be different visits well so I think. And bike trail well your only allowed on the path they say not what you want. So some areas I dont want to be off my bike and walking my bike. Idk so dont quote me on this. But the view is nice. Some people will say its just a bunch of weeds and others just like simple nature as how it just is and not tampered with. You make the choice but I will have to return just so you know it is NOT pet friendly unless it is a (SERVICE DOG ONLY) so I dont know why it says pet friendly should say service dogs Only!. So it confuses some people. Dog-friendliness: It should be rephrase/written different it should say (ONLY SERVICE DOGS ALLOWED) Not personal Pets. Thats what I was Told. So it confuses people and have to leave

Great place to take a long, peaceful walk or hike. Great signs everywhere along the trails, letting you know where you are at. It was really cool when I heard goats and childrens voices across the river. I would highly recommend bringing water and mosquitoes spray, especially if you are going to spend some time there. I forgot both but still enjoyed it. Toilets: Nice clean restrooms at the visitor center

Great outdoor hike with the family. The towers with the cross over bridge give you a great view of the area. They have great nature and local animal info, sell drinks and snacks in the visitor center for you to stay hydrated and fueled during your hike. Entry fee is $5.00 for car load per day or $10.00 per carload for the year. Yes, per carload. Who ever you fit in your car.

The hikes here are excellent. Right now with this weather it was tremendous...a lot of moss which is good for decorating ornaments. The entrance is being remodeled but you can enter from one side. We went in the afternoon and there were still many people walking through the trial. recommendable

Enjoyed walking the trails. The trails were nit that well marked and the map provided did not show level of difficulty. On line it does list each trail and level of difficulty but would be helpful to have it on the map.

An excellent place to walk and explore. It is important to bring water, repellent and very comfortable tennis shoes. I also recommend checking the weather to choose the most appropriate clothing when exploring the area.

I took my parents here for a good walk!! They absolutely loved it, and so did I!! Its a must visit place. Toilets: Cleanliness 8/10. I gave it an 8 because once we got there, it wasnt clean, but once we were done with our walk, they were absolutely clean! Public restrooms are available at some trails but not all.
